Our History

USA and Global:

• The brothers Ernest and Edmund Horwath came to the USA from Budapest in 1907. After their arrival, they started working within accounting for hotels and restaurants.
• On 31 July, 1915 they founded the firm Horwath & Horwath in New York and hired their first employee.
• Between 1918 and 1930 they opened offices in eight other American cities and took on four additional partners.
• During the 1930s Ernest Horwath and Louis Toth published “Uniform Accounting System for Hotels”. Their next book “Hotel Accounting” becomes a textbook at Cornell University. Louis Toth successfully publishes charts for VAT calculation, which are later used by the Internal Revenue Service.
• In 1947 they open an office in Miami as a basis for expansion into Latin America.
• In the 1950s the firm won a consulting tender for American Express and took part in the development of their credit card.
• By 1965 the firm had 18 offices in the USA and 34 offices in 25 countries.
• In the 1960s the firm expanded geographically and specialises itself by means of mergers. Following a merger with LKG & Co, Laventhol & Horwath is the 7^th largest accounting firm in the USA.
• 1990 was a difficult year as the firm overcame a crisis – extensive restructuring in the USA leading to change of name to Horwath International.
• In 1991 Horwath International takes over an additional five American consulting & accounting firms.
• In 1994 Horwath International was joined by Clark Whitehill, the 12^th biggest accountancy company in the UK. Horwath & Company becomes the first international auditing firm in China.
• In 2009 Horwath International changes its name to Crowe Horwath International. This is done to emphasize its strong position in the USA, where it is among the ten largest audit firms.

Central and Eastern Europe:

• In 1979 TPA Horwath was founded in the town of Langenlois, Austria.
• Since its foundation in 1979, the firm has grown rapidly. The headcount has risen from 65 in 1990 to more than 900 today. Expansion into neighbouring Central & Eastern European countries began in the early 1990s.
